A portable hotspot is a small battery-powered modem with a pre-installed SIM (or eSIM) already provisioned on a data plan, usually through a roaming agreement with several carriers rather than one network you'd recognize by name. That's the real mechanism behind "works in 100+ countries" marketing — it's riding whichever local carrier has the best coverage in each country, the same way any international SIM would, not a proprietary network of its own.

What actually separates one hotspot from another is rarely the headline speed number. Watch for three things: whether "unlimited data" is genuinely unlimited or throttles hard after a threshold buried in the terms; how many hours of real battery life you get with several devices connected, not the single-device lab figure; and whether the data plan is billed separately from the device itself, since a cheap hotspot paired with an expensive ongoing plan isn't actually cheap.
