Bulbs, lamps and plug-in units sold to keep mosquitoes away from a room — reviewed for the mechanism they actually use rather than the one on the box.

The category name is the one shoppers search for, but it covers two genuinely opposite strategies. A repellent makes an area unattractive to insects, usually through a dispersed compound or, in the case of ultrasonic units, a claimed acoustic deterrent. A trap does the reverse: it makes itself more attractive than you are, then kills what arrives. Plenty of products marketed as repellents are, mechanically, traps — and where you put the device depends entirely on which one you've bought.

Where the marketing tends to outrun the hardware: bare effectiveness percentages with no test conditions attached, coverage areas quoted without stating how they were measured, and light-based traps sold specifically against mosquitoes — a species that navigates by exhaled carbon dioxide, body heat and skin odour far more than by light.
